Ahoy All!

I am writing this article while the snow is falling, the wind is blowing, and the temperature just does not want to come up from zero! So let's talk about spring!!!

To start spring off will be the "Burn Your Socks" party on Saturday, March 21st. Which just so happens to be the spring equinox aka the first day of spring! (Ok, it's actually Friday...but we party on Saturday!) Time to burn those nasty winter socks and get back to bare feet in boat shoes, in spite of snow and ice!!! Last year, I believe there was 36 pairs of socks that met their demise amid the cheers of avid sailors - who may have had a few drinks! (No one ended up IN the fire pit, thankfully!)

The first sailing event of the year will be the Star fleet Tulip Time Regatta on May 16th and 17th. This will be the 62nd annual regatta event! Never has it been cancelled - there was one no-wind weekend in which they were able to make it up at a later date - in 62 years! There is always an excellent line up of "Star" sailors from around the United States, as well as our own top notch Stars, for this first regatta for the Star fleet.

The Yacht Club calendar should be out to all members shortly. If you have receieved the Country Club calendar, you will notice Yacht Club activities are included. A couple of recent additions; the Star fleet will be hosting their District Blue Star Regatta on July 31st and August 1st. This event regularly draws 18-20 boats and we are very pleased to be able to host this prestigious regatta!

Our Junior Sailing Program will host one of the West Michigan Youth Sailing Association Regatta Series on Friday, June 26th. This series consists of 6 regattas throughout the summer, sailed at member clubs. Gull Lake will host the first of the 2015 series. We have been told to expect 90 boats from the Opti, Laser, 420, and Butterfly classes. They will sail on 3 courses set up close to the Country Club. We expect a lot of parents and support boats to view the racing. It will be a busy day at the club! Participating clubs will be from Grand Rapids, Macatawa Bay, Muskegon, Saugatuck, South Haven, Spring Lake, St. Joseph, and White Lake.

I hope this will get you looking forward to spring! Any member of GLCC is invited to attend and observe what happens on the beautiful Gull Lake side of the club! Keep thinking warm thoughts! There is a warrant out for Punxsutawney Phil!
