Bill Hawk
GLYC Commodore

Dear Members,

As this is my first communication piece as Commodore, I would like to take this time to thank Tom Lechota for his many years of dedication and service to the Yacht Club as well as the Country Club. His leadership will be greatly missed.

The sailing season is winding down and the planning for next year has begun. In July the 210 Fleet hosted the MIdwest Championship, the Graves Plaque and the Wallace Trophy with challenging Gull Lake sailing conditions. Jim Babel successfully defended his Midwest Championship title while Fred EInspahr won the Graves Plaque. Jim Babel also won the Wallace Trophy. Greg Smith/TC Belco along with Art Riley and Mike Brundage represented Gull Lake at Star District Championship on Lake St. Clair. Greg and TC ended up in third place overall. The Sunfish Fleet hosted the US Masters Championship with 38 boats competing for line honors. The following weekend the Yacht Club hosted the Mary Queen of Scots Regatta in memory of Mary Doolittle with 6 boats competing with John Kittredge placing 3rd as the best Gull Lake finish.

Summer programs finished up in early August with over 40 junior sailing participants under the excellent leadership and instruction from Mike MacQueen and his staff. We look forward to seeing those sailors out on the starting line in the near future.

The Labor Day Handicap race will take place on Labor Day with a 2 pm start time as well as the fall "Around the Island Series" starting the following Sunday.
