Star Fleet

HISTORY

The Gull Lake Star fleet was chartered in 1933 and is part of the Star Class’s 4th District. The Star is the premier one design fleet on Gull Lake and routinely attracts our Clubs best sailors. The Star fleet sails on Wednesday nights April thru September. We currently have 11 active boats sailing on a regular basis.

 

210 FLEET

fleet captain FRED EINSPAHR

FRED FIRST RACED SAILBOATS WITH BOYHOOD FRIENDS ON LAKE MINNETONKA, OUTSIDE MINNEAPOLIS.  FRED BEGAN SAILING 210’S ON GULL LAKE CREWING FOR WIN TODD IN #405 “CAROMANDA”.  WIN, FRED AND PAT BOYLE NEARLY WON THE INT. 210 NATIONAL REGATTA SAILED ON GULL LAKE IN 1983, FINISHING 2ND IN A FLEET OF 28 BOATS.  SEVERAL YEARS LATER, FRED AND BOB ARMITAGE RESTORED A WOOD 210 (# 312), ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1960 IN HOLLAND MI BY BEACON BOAT WORKS.  LAST YEAR, SAILING #312 (“CAHOOTS”), FRED AND HIS ABLE CREW LARRY CARTER AND STEVE BIGELOW, WON THE 210 SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP, THE MIDWEST CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THE GRAVES REGATTA. LAST YEAR FRED ALSO WON THE GLYC DOOLITTLE SERIES WITH CREW ROB VANDERWEELE SAILED IN HIS STAR “FRED-EX”, AND WITH LARRY CARTER, WON THE COVETED GULL LAKE YACHT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP, THE BOUDEMAN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES, WHICH IS CONTESTED BY THE SIX GLYC FLEET CHAMPIONS IN FLYING SCOTS.  FRED ALSO OWNS AND HAS RACED A SNIPE (“TONKA”)... WITHOUT NOTABLE SUCCESS... AND HAS CREWED IN A NUMBER OF “BIG-BOAT” REGATTAS ON LAKE MICHIGAN, INCLUDING THREE “MACS” WITH LONG TIME GLYC SKIPPER AND NOW BOAT BUILDER, BRUCE HUTCHINSON.

HISTORY

THE GULL LAKE INTERNATIONAL 210 FLEET BEGAN IN 1958 AND HAS GROWN TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE FLEETS AT GULL LAKE YACHT CLUB. 

THE GULL LAKE 210 FLEET REPRESENTS THE MIDWEST SECTION OF THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION WITH 6 OTHER FLEETS ON THE EAST COAST.  THE MIDWEST CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA HAS BEEN SAILED SINCE 1962 AND HAS BEEN HOSTED BY THE GULL LAKE FLEET MANY TIMES.  THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA HAS BEEN SAILED SINCE 1948 AND HOSTED BY GLYC ON A ROTATION BASIS SINCE 1983 AND WILL AGAIN BE RACED AT GULL LAKE IN 2012.

THE GULL LAKE 210ERS RACE ON SUNDAY AFTERNOONS FOR SEVERAL TROPHY SERIES THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.  RENEWED INTEREST IN THE FLEET OF THE LARGEST ONE DESIGN SAILBOAT ON GULL LAKE WILL SEE MANY AS 10 OF THE 29+ FOOTERS RACING DURING THE CURRENT SAILING SEASON.

JOINED THE SCOT FLEET AFTER COMPLETING THE ADULT SAILING CLASS IN 1996.  FS 2560 PURCHASED FROM ROB BRINKERHOFF FAMILY IN 1996.  SUCCEEDED BRENDA BELL AS FLEET CAPTAIN (I MISSED THAT MEETING!!)  INITIATED THE "MARY DOOLITTLE, QUEEN OF SCOTS" REGATTA AND HAVE CHAIRED THE FS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS AT GULL LAKE IN 2006, 2011.

HISTORY

ON APRIL 16, 1960, FLYING SCOT FLEET 15 WAS CHARTERED AT GULL LAKE YACHT CLUB. MAX AND MARY DOOLITTLE BROUGHT FS 137 TO BEAUTIFUL GULL LAKE AND TODAY MAX IS SAILING FS 4755. HE STILL IS GIVING LESSONS TO ANYONE REMOTELY INTERESTED IN SAILING! (ALTHOUGH HE PREFERS BLONDS!!)  MARY PASSED AWAY IN 2005 AFTER 52 YEARS AS FAITHFUL CREW FOR MAX!  THE "MARY DOOLITTLE, QUEEN OF SCOTS MEMORIAL REGATTA" IS HELD IN HER HONOR. ANOTHER LONG TIME MEMBER, JOHN KITTREDGE AND SON, JOHN CONTINUE TO WIN SEASON HONORS FREQUENTLY!
       
FLYING SCOT INC. WILL DELIVER FS 6000 THIS YEAR....FS 0001 "NUMBER ONE" STILL CONTINUES TO COMPETE...AND CONTINUES TO WIN!
       
CURRENT FLEET 15 ROSTER HAS 11 BOATS...4 RACE CONSISTENTLY, OTHER ARE FAMILY PLEASURE BOATS. THE FLEET HAS HAD 2 DISTRICT WINNERS....30 YEARS APART!  LARRY CARTER/RICH PELONG IN 1981,  BILL PFUND/JOHN PFUND/OLIVIA PFUND IN 2011. BILL IS ALSO THE CURRENT FS DISTRICT GOVERNOR AND THE PFUND FAMILY ATTENDS SEVERAL OFF-LAKE REGATTAS DURING THE YEAR.
